Walking the Talk
Developing the theme of “walking the talk” is one of the best themes you can create when setting up an effective safety culture in a company. If management doesn’t do it, nobody will. And it does start with top management making that decision and passing it down. However, I do believe that an effective safety culture rest squarely on the shoulders of the management team, and they must be held accountable; Managers and supervisors.
I like the idea that management leadership is the magnet that aligns the driving force for developing a safety culture. And the need is there to get people (their chosen supervisors) into the right supervisory position – to “get the right people in the right places”. Those defining roles and the responsibility that comes with it should be set up front.
And employees need to be held to the very same expectations. If cynicism exists, that condition needs to be dealt with. This is a definite responsibility of the managers.
