What Sets the Culture?

Certain cultures do have safety as one of the values (not priority) that make up the culture.  Other cultures make it very clear that safety is unimportant.  In the latter, almost nothing will work; meetings will be boring, job hazard analysis (JHA’s) perceived only as paperwork.

The culture of an organization sets the tone for everything in the safety arena.  In a positive safety culture, it says everything you do about safety is important.  In a participative environment, (culture,) an organization is saying to the employee, "We want and need your help.”  Some cultures urge creativity and innovation solutions, while other destroys it by not caring about employees.  Some cultures tap the employees for ideas and help; while other force the employee to never use their brains at work.
