Einstein the parrot

June 20, 2008 By: webmaster Category: Kim Komando, Story of Interest, Video Clip

How about some fun in safety.  This may be a good ice breaker.  I think that it only proves that if you work with something for a while, you can training anyone.  I found video clip on Kim Komando newsletter.

Einstein is an African Grey Parrot. He and his trainer appeared on Animal Planet’s Pet Star variety show. In this Video of the Day, you’ll see Einstein blow the judges away.

Einstein has a pretty big vocabulary. He can also mimic various animals and make sound effects. But did you know that parrots can’t actually talk. They don’t have vocal cords. When they talk, they’re actually whistling. Just try and whistle like Einstein.

OSHA Voluntary Guidelines – A Safety Management

June 20, 2008 By: webmaster Category: Leadership, Management

As I continue to post information on the safety culture blog you will begin to understand why there has to be management commitment from all levels of the organization. This commitment must be strong so that a successful management system can be developed, continually improved, and sustained. Sustainability of your process is what you want to achieve. In Six Sigma training, there is a process owner (management/supervision) who is will to make the necessary changes to a system so that it will sustain itself. This is no difference in the safety arena. The methods list on this safety blog will help you to get started on the right track to developing a successful safety management system. In addition, the OSHA voluntary program is another valuable resource, as the voluntary program will provide you a specific perspective on management systems that is suitable for a successful management system. You can purchase my book to understand all of the concepts or you can visit the OSHA website to look at the various ways that they promote a safety culture. This reference can be found in the Safety and Health Management Systems eTool sections of OSHA.

Can You Change Behavior

June 20, 2008 By: webmaster Category: Behavior, Culture, Leadership, Management, Motivation

When defining management system changes, management needs to spend time observing and evaluating indicators upstream to understand how behaviors are changing and how they affect the management system. Management needs to understand that behaviors are visible evidence of norms that are part of employee work practices. One of the best techniques that the I can encourage is to listen to what employees have to say. Sometimes employees just want to talk to someone about work or personal issues, etc. In these cases, you should sharpen your listening skills. This is one of the most important key concepts to understand. The key as I see it is, sometime we as a society listen to employees, but do we really hear from they are saying.
