Principal Management Leadership Traits

July 03, 2008 By: James Roughton Category: Culture, Leadership, Management, Motivation

Let’s review a list of principal management leadership traits I have seen effectively utilized throughout my careers in various industries, and work environments. For practical purposes, I will focus only on a few of the more apparently critical attributes I have observed, that has helped to maintain a keen focus on the impact of leadership and the safety culture’s management system. The list includes, but is not limited to the following:

  • Demonstrating leadership and commitment to the safety program
  • Charting the course, sometimes known as creating the vision for your management system
  • Defining the roles and responsibilities for all levels of management and employees in the management system
  • Making sure that individuals are held accountable for their roles and responsibilities
  • Creating a climate (culture) that actively fosters meaningful employee participation in the entire safety program

Some readers might take exception to these attributes, but from my personal perspective, if these items are performed consistently well, organizations will have a much greater opportunity for success when developing an effective safety culture and building a management system.
