The home handy person’s guide to ladder safety | Factoidz

April 20, 2009 By: James Roughton Category: fall, ladders

Nice article on ladder safety

According to the American Academy of Orthopedic surgeons, every year an average of 500,000 people end up in the emergency room because of ladder accidents. No one knows how many others are injured but don’t seek medical attention for their injuries. In the United States about 300 people die every year from ladder related accidents. The cost of ladder related injuries in the US is about $11 billion annually. We can’t work without using ladders but we can avoid becoming a statistic by learning to use ladders safely and by practicing ladder safety faithfully.

WTIC News/Talk 1080 – Southington Company Faces $180K in Fines on State Project

April 07, 2009 By: James Roughton Category: citations, fall

Matt Dwyer

A company hired by the state Department of Transportation faces up to 180-thousand dollars in fines from federal workplace safety officials.
Brunalli Construction of Southington was replacing a bridge carrying Route 7 over the Housatonic River between Canaan and Salisbury.
OSHA spokesman Ted Fitzgerald says there were two types of safety violations found on the site, one being fall hazards.
"The employees were working without fall protection, on unprotected or inadequately guarded sections of the bridge," Fitzgerald said. "This left them open to the possibility of falls of up to 43-feet into the river below."

Stucco Contractor Cited for Fall Hazards in 2007, 2008, and now 2009 — Occupational Health & Safety

OSHA has proposed $118,650 in fines against 4 Brothers Stucco Co., a Cleveland, Tenn.-based stucco contractor, for 15 alleged repeat and serious violations of safety standards, making this the third consecutive year the agency has cited the Cleveland, Tenn.-based stucco contractor. OSHA’s inspection found employees working on scaffolding, in an aerial lift, and on the roof at a worksite in Torrington, Conn., were exposed to falls of up to 22 feet. The inspection also identified electrical, overhead, and chemical hazard communication deficiencies at the worksite.

"These sizable fines reflect both the seriousness and recurring nature of several of the conditions cited here," said C. William Freeman III, OSHA’s area director in Hartford, Conn. "Keep in mind that falls are the number one killer in construction work and can occur in an instant. Be it a scaffold, an aerial lift, or a roof, proper and effective fall protection must be in place and in use at all times."
