The HIRE/HIGHER Attitude

May 04, 2009 By: webmaster Category: job hunting, job resources

August 19th, 2008

By Carol Quinn

From PART I: Somewhere, we learned that if we hire an applicant with the skills we need, the results will be an employee who will do a great job. WRONG! Skills simply means the applicant can do the job, it does not mean they will do the job better than anyone else. Making hiring decisions based on skills leaves job performance a mystery until after the hire. Interview-savvy applicants have made it tougher for interviewers to accurately assess motivation, often causing the misjudgment to favor applicants who are NOT High Performers.

Help is available to assist interviewers in accurately identifying High Performers. Locus of Control, a 50-year old self-efficacy behavioral psychology has been incorporated into the interview process to improve employee selection. It reveals achievement attitudes and behaviors common to ALL High Performers. High Performers seem to find a way to produce consistent results, rather than consistent excuses, regardless of skill. Locus of Control provides specific insight which can be used to distinguish between true High Performers and those portraying them.   To read the rest of the post, click on the link below.

What Would Dad Say » 12 Reasons LinkUp Will Be the New, Best Way to Find Your Next Job

April 03, 2009 By: webmaster Category: job hunting, job resources

This is a nice article that explains why LInkUp is another way to find a job.  Remember this is just another job search engine.  All caution must be taken into account when using any online service.

Posted in April 2nd, 2009

Ed. Note: Once in a great while, after 200 posts or so, I use this space to communicate what it is we do here. Ok, it is basically an advertisement for our company. But I hope you know and trust me enough by now to know I wouldn’t steer you wrong.

I have said before that the real test of a new company or product is simple: Does it solve a problem? Would life be better, more convenient, less costly, or more efficient if only we had YOUR product? Answering this question, or stimulating a conversation about it, is at the heart of our nation’s economy. Or, someone has to sell something. Well, it might as well be me today. If you are a job seeker, or even a blog/website, here are some things you don’t know about LinkUp. But should. Until LinkUp, job seekers had some real problems finding a decent job.

Six-in-Ten Workers Over the Age of Sixty Postponing Retirement Due to Economic Downturn, Finds CareerBuilder Survey

March 18, 2009 By: webmaster Category: job hunting, job resources

What do you think about this article?   Some over 60, as I am, find it hard to get interviews, based on an extended resume which showcases my age.   On the other hand, there are fundamentally 3 issues when at this stage of the game, in my opinion, age, too much experience, and too much $$$.   In normal times, age is sometimes a problem, depends on the level you have reached in the organization.  Then in the economic downturn, the buzz word today, you now have the $$$ problem coupled with age.  An ironic twist of fate.  And the interesting thing is, again in my opinion, this is the time when organizations look at their talent pool and observe the 3 things, age, experience, and $$$, but then add a 4th element: “I now have a great excuse to get rid of who I want, because I can now blame in on the downturn.”  And of course when good time come back, these positions are filled again with a lower page scale.  This is my rant and of course my opinion.

Read the following article and think about that I have just ranted about.

-Career Expert Offers Tips for Mature Workers to Navigate Tough Economy–

CHICAGO, March 17, 2009 – While the economic crisis is being felt by nearly every segment of the working population, one group of workers is faced with particularly tough decisions regarding their futures. Six-in-ten workers (60 percent) over the age of 60 say they are putting off their retirement due to the impact of the U.S. financial crisis on their long-term savings, according to a survey by CareerBuilder. The survey was conducted among more than 8,000 workers between November 12 and December 1, 2008.

A plan for when you suddenly find yourself unemployed

March 18, 2009 By: webmaster Category: job hunting, job resources

I found this great article posted on LinkedIn written by Rebecca Thompson. This article outlines some great tips about your job search.  This article is being re-printed with the permission of Rebecca Thompson .

A Plan For When You Suddenly Find Yourself Unemployed.

Being proactive is key to a successful job search outcome. Use these six steps to get motivated:

1. Assess your situation and create written plan of action to keep track of your progress.

2. Update/create a resume. If needed – get help from a resume writer.

3. Search job-listing resources and write down the company name, telephone number and contact name, date you applied and a brief description of the job.

a. Use online job search websites – Post Resume and Job Alert tools.

b. Search Classifieds

c. Seek help from recruitment firms, employment agencies, college alumni services, or a career coach.

d. Go through the yellow page directory.

4. Networking offers the highest return-on-investment when job searching.

a. List contacts including: family, friends, co-workers, college roommates, professors, and community connections. Put the word out you are job hunting.

b. Join top online networking groups, local community groups/organizations, attend job clubs/networking meetings, and make contacts at your children’s school.

c. Use networking tools that include: elevator speech, networking cards, one-page networking resume, professional biography, and target search summary.

5. Practice answering sample interview questions; focus on the difficult ones commonly used to test how you handle pressure. Do an online search to find these sample questions. Ask your own questions to obtain enough information about the employer. After the interview, use strategically timed documents including: “Thank You”, “Follow-Up”, and “Critical Leadership Initiatives” documents. These documents keep you current in the interviewer’s mind.

6. During the process, take full responsibility for your attitude. Staying upbeat is key to keeping the momentum strong.

You will soon find that conducting a fruitful job search requires two things: a clever strategy and persistent effort.

On the Job: Consider all sides before relocating for a job – Salt Lake Tribune

March 17, 2009 By: webmaster Category: Story of Interest, job hunting

By Anita Bruzzese

Updated: 03/01/2009 08:17:45 AM MST

While some 5 million people are currently looking for work, one thing adding to the pressure is the decision whether it’s worth the gamble to move somewhere else to either look for work or to take a new job.

For someone like Jenny Brooks, relocation turned out to be a gamble that didn’t pay off.

Brooks, 32, made the decision in June 2008 to move her family to Birmingham, Ala., from Coos Bay, Ore., to launch a public relations campaign for a new client of her Northern California employer. With her employer offering a $6,000 moving allowance and a promise of six months rent paid in the new location while she tried to sell her Coos Bay home, Brooks, her husband and two young daughters made the move to what they hoped was a great career opportunity in a bigger city with more to offer.
