Republicans rally around OSHA reform (again) – Feature Articles – ISHN

August 24, 2009 By: webmaster Category: risk management, safety, safety systems

Is this going to be good for industry?

Using private consultants is the key provision

Give Senator Mike Enzi, a freshman Republican from Wyoming, credit for this: he’s persistent. After coming out with a bill to reform OSHA earlier this year, he introduced a new version on September 30th that has more support among Republicans than any OSHA bill crafted since the GOP took control of Congress in 1994-and there have been at least a half-dozen.

The Safety Advancement for Employees Act (SAFE) combines all of Enzi’s previously introduced OSHA bill with some provisions from another bill that had been introduced by Senator Judd Gregg (R-Vt.). Co-sponsors of SAFE include Senate Majority Leader Trent Lott (R-Miss.), Senate Labor Committee Chairman Jim Jeffords (R-Vt.), and Public Health and Safety Labor Committee Chairman Bill Frist (R-Tenn.).

Rep. James Talent (R-Mo.), chairman of the House Small Business Committee, has introduced almost identical OSHA legislation on the House side. Two Democrats are co-sponsors of Talent’s bill.

It’s no coincidence that a press conference announcing the SAFE proposal was held one week before Senate confirmation hearings for OSHA chief nominee Charles Jeffress, according to one source. The proposal is a reminder to Jeffress and the Clinton administration that Republicans will be keeping a close watch on the agency, says the source.  To read the rest of the article click on the link below.

Key Leadership Concepts

July 31, 2009 By: Nathan Category: Behavior, Communication, Leadership, Management, Organizational culture, Safety Culture Excellence, Training, continuous improvement, management of change, safety, safety management

Ideas and thoughts adapted from my very old US Army leadership card:

SUPERVISION IS: The art of checking on the progress of actions and job assignments without harassment or taking on the job yourself.

LEADERSHIP IS: The art of influencing and directing personnel to obtain willing teamwork, confidence, respect and cooperation to accomplish the daily task assignment. Leadership is essential in developing a solid safety and health attitude among personnel

INDICATIONS OF LEADERSHIP:

  • Morale – The morale of my area is high (How do I know?)
  • “Esprit De Corps” – My personnel act as a Team (How do I know?)

  • DisciplineMy work areas and personnel clearly show quality and orderliness (How do I know?)

  • ProficiencyMy personnel know how to properly do their tasks (How do I know?)

A GREAT Laugh at our profession on this Friday!!!

May 01, 2009 By: webmaster Category: Job Hazard Analysis, OSHA, Power Tools, Video Clip, safety

From SAFTENG’s Weekly Safety Newsletter – Brian has found a funny way of looking at safety.

This is the VERY BEST video that promotes our profession in a funny way.  We MUST be able to laugh at ourselves and our profession once in a while and this was just a great skit.  It features my #1 "Partner in Safety" WorkSafe Victoria on a TV show in Australia that is much like the US and UK based show ‘Whose line is it anyway".  An actor is put in a situation and has to quickly react to the situation.  This skit, the guy is a construction site foreman with somewhat of a questionable safety program.  He has on an interesting hardhat and tool belt and has to take on two actors who are WorkSafe Inspectors inspecting the work site.  I assure you, it will at least bring a smile to your face, if not tears to your eyes!

The Foundations for a Safe Workplace

April 17, 2009 By: webmaster Category: Management, safety, safety systems

This is a great publication from Oregon Safety OSHA on Management Systems.

The Foundations for a Safe Workplace (4755) has a new look. We have added new photos and condensed the material so that it is easier to read and speaks more specifically to the subject matter. The text in the old publication is still relevant, but you will definitely want to check out the new version when you get a chance. You can view it online here or go to www.orosha.org, click on the A to Z list and then “S” for “Safety and Health Management.”  You will find it listed under “Publications.” We have taken out the CD in the new version, but you can find all the forms that were on the CD online.

Safety Video

March 15, 2009 By: webmaster Category: Video Clip, safety

I received this email from a user group and thought that I would share with everyone.

The link below is provided for your consideration and use. The link shows
a moving safety video that you can send to your employees for viewing.
Although the video is in a construction setting, the safety lesson is
applicable to all work environments and well worth the 15 minutes to view.

Importance Of Health And Safety Management Guidelines Within The Workplace

January 20, 2009 By: webmaster Category: Leadership, Motivation, OSHA, manufacturing, safety

This is a nicely article from  Articledashboard.com that outlines OSHA management process.

‘”The Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) has issued voluntary protection program management guidelines to encourage employers to do more than just comply with regulations to prevent occupational injuries and illnesses. Although compliance with the law, including specific OSHA standards, is an important objective, an effective corporate safety program looks beyond specific requirements of law to address all hazards. It seeks to prevent injuries and illnesses, whether or not compliance is an issue.”
